Why We Use Oil Finish on Sauna Accessories
When wood is used in a sauna, it lives in very specific conditions: heat, steam, temperature changes and constant touch.
Raw wood looks beautiful. But in real use it can:
- absorb moisture
- darken unevenly
- become stained from hands or oils
- feel rough over time
That’s why we use a light oil finish.
Why oil instead of varnish?
We choose oil because it protects the wood without turning it into plastic.
Oil:
- soaks into the wood fibres
- keeps the surface matte and natural
- feels warm and smooth
- does not create a sealed glossy layer
Varnish, on the other hand, forms a hard film on top. In sauna heat that layer can crack, peel or simply feel artificial.
In a space designed for relaxation, the material should stay honest and natural.
What does oil actually do?
A proper sauna-safe oil:
- reduces moisture absorption
- protects against stains
- keeps the surface smooth
- makes cleaning easier
It does not block the wood.
It supports it.
How to refresh an oiled surface
The good part about oil finish is simple maintenance.
If the surface looks dry after long use:
- Lightly sand with fine sandpaper.
- Wipe off dust.
- Apply a thin layer of sauna-safe oil.
- Let it absorb and dry completely before using again.
No stripping, no heavy restoration.
Can it be left unfinished?
Yes — but raw wood will require more care and will age faster in humid conditions.
Oil is simply a balanced choice between protection and natural appearance.
